Mi-kis
The Full Story
The Mi-Ki, a delightful and charming companion breed, has a fascinating origin that traces back to carefully selected foundation breeds. Unlike "designer dogs" created through arbitrary combinations, Mi-Kis are the result of meticulous breeding practices, ensuring their purebred status and the preservation of their distinctive traits.
The Mi-Ki's lineage is rooted in several distinguished breeds, including the Shih Tzu, Maltese, Pomeranian, Pekingese, and possibly a touch of Bichon Frise/Cotton de Tulear, Papillon, and Yorkshire Terrier. These breeds were thoughtfully combined to achieve a harmonious blend of desirable characteristics. While early accounts suggested the inclusion of Maltese, Papillon, and Japanese Chin in the Mi-Ki's heritage, modern DNA screening has clarified the breed's genetic composition. Notably, the Papillon and Japanese Chin influence appears to be minimal in the DNA profiles of Mi-Kis.
Established as a pure breed since the 1980s, the Mi-Ki gained official recognition in January 2016 when the United Kennel Club acknowledged them in the Companion Group. This recognition attests to the breed's unique qualities and affirms its status as a distinct and well-defined canine companion.
Mi-Kis are known for their endearing traits, including a gentle temperament, affectionate nature, and a manageable size that makes them ideal companions for various lifestyles. As a result of responsible breeding practices and adherence to pedigree standards, Mi-Kis consistently exhibit the wonderful qualities that have endeared them to dog lovers worldwide.
